Switzerland, in central Europe, is the land of the Alps. Its tallest peak is the Dufourspitze at 15,203 ft (4,634 m) on the Swiss side of the Italian border, one of 10 summits of the Monte Rosa massif. The tallest peak in all of the Alps, Mont Blanc (15,771 ft; 4,807 m), is actually in France. Most of Switzerland is composed of a mountainous plateau bordered by the great bulk of the Alps on the south and by the Jura Mountains on the northwest. The country's largest lakes—Geneva, Constance (Bodensee), and Maggiore—straddle the French, German-Austrian, and Italian borders, respectively. The Rhine, navigable from Basel to the North Sea, is the principal inland waterway.

Education Information:
Switzerland is a truly beautiful alpine country, renowned for its mountains and lakes… and chocolate. It is also perhaps the most cosmopolitan country in the world – over 20 per cent of residents are foreign nationals, and it has four official languages: French, German, Italian and Romantsch. It is an international centre for finance, politics and commerce, and also for hospitality, and is the world leader in the study of tourism and hotel management.

Switzerland is considered the birthplace of tourism. In the past, and even today, people from all over the world visit Europe and Switzerland for its natural beauty and quality of service. This tiny nation with a population of 7 million has 5600 hotels which provide accommodation for more than 35 million guests every year!

Tourism is indeed a very important economic activity in Switzerland. Due to the lack of manpower and the high cost of our labour force, the Swiss hospitality industry not only welcomes a majority of international visitors, but also employs a truly international work force. This is also reflected in hotel management schools, in terms of the curricula offered and the mix in the student population.

In today’s world the words ‘tolerance’, ‘diversity’ and ‘ethics’ are as important as ‘professionalism’ and ‘business management’.

Switzerland – the birthplace of tourism and the leading hotel management schools of the world !

Education and training possibilities
There are language schools in Switzerland offering tuition in Italian, German and French in the various regions where the languages are spoken. But Switzerland is perhaps best known for its tourism and hospitality training industry. Diplomas and degree courses are commonly offered, and courses, which are taught in French, German and/or English, involve training in all aspects of the industry. As Switzerland's hotel management colleges are private, fees are high. The Swiss Hotel Schools Association (ASEH) represents Switzerland's 12 leading hotel management schools and is committed to maintaining high professional and training standards within the hotel management training industry. Typical job possibilities after completion of a diploma or degree in hotel management are in the hospitality, leisure, health, food service or tourism industries. The majority of students are from Europe, but a high proportion also come from Asia.

Travelling around Switzerland
Switzerland has one of the most efficient transport networks in the world - not surprising, given its reputation for precision. Public transport incorporates trains, buses, boats and funiculars which link the whole country. 'Postbuses' serve the more remote areas while trains are reliable and fast.

Tourists are advised to buy one of the special tickets on offer which reduces travel costs. The Swiss Saver Pass entitles the holder to unlimited travel on Swiss Federal Railways, boats, most Alpine postbuses as well as trams and buses in 36 towns. The pass also entitles the holder to reductions on funiculars and mountain railways. Passes are valid for four, eight, 15, 22 or 30 days and prices start at US$170 for four days of second-class travel.

Alternatively, the Swiss Card allows a free return train journey from an arrival point in Switzerland to any other Swiss destination, 50 per cent off rail, boat and bus travel and reductions on mountain railways. Passes are valid for one month and cost US$110 for second-class travel. There is also a Swiss Flexi Pass, which allows unlimited travel for up to eight days within a one month period and starts at US$166 for three days unlimited travel. All these passes should be bought outside Switzerland, although they are available in a few outlets in the country.

Crucial visa info and work rights
Switzerland is not a member of the European Union, but nationals from many countries in Europe do not require a visa to enter Switzerland. See below for a list of countries whose nationals require a visa to enter Switzerland. Students from all countries intending to study in Switzerland for longer than three months will need to apply for a residence permit from their local embassy or consulate. Residence permit holders must register with the police within eight days of arrival.

ASEH
The Swiss Hotel Schools Association was founded in 1986 with the aim of controlling the quality and promotion of the existing, traditional Swiss hotel management schools. It has established strict academic, professional and ethical standards for its members, and welcomes hotel management schools located in Switzerland who meet and abide by the standards of quality outlined in its bylaws and its membership criteria.

The Swiss hotel industry enjoys an excellent international reputation. To a large extent, this is due to the work carried out daily in establishments affiliated with the Swiss Hotel Schools Association. In this respect the coherent work carried out by the Swiss Hotel Schools Association complements the efforts made by the Swiss Authorities. Both strive to guarantee a high qualify of professionalism.

ASEH is supported by the Swiss professional organizations GastroSuisse, the Swiss Hotel Association and the Swiss Union of Hotel Employees, all of which have a representative on the Board. It may not be easy for students to select a school from such a wide choice, especially as there is no ranking because all members have completed the accreditation procedure and fulfilled the requisite criteria. All members are of the highest quality, but each school has its own particularities. It is up to the students to compare all parameters and decide which school would suit them the best, for example the dates of intakes, the fees, the location, the leisure activities available, etc. Students are always welcome to ask for names of graduates from the school of their choice, in order to get in touch with them.

ASEH regards itself as the label for quality in Swiss Hotel Management Education. By offering studies of the highest standards, member schools enhance the prestige of the entire profession.
