Academic Programmes

SHMS University Center offers a wide range of academic programmes at Higher Diploma, Postgraduate Diploma, BA Degree, Masters Degree and PhD Level.

Higher Diploma Programmes
The wide range of integrated Higher Diplomas offered by SHMS University Center are your flexible and accessible entry into higher education. A Higher Diploma is the perfect base for further study or for entry-level employment. After successful completion of a Higher Diploma, students may progress onto higher study at BA and then MA level.

Applicants must hold a High School Diploma (or equivalent) and must meet the required competency in English.

BA Degree Programmes
The BA degree suite comprises five degrees, which are ideal for students wishing to specialise in a particular area or discipline. Applicants seeking a broader knowledge and qualification may combine any two specialist degrees to form a combination degree. Achieving a degree is the best way to increase your options and potential. All BA graduates will be qualified for entry-level positions within their chosen field whilst suitably qualified graduates may progress onto advanced study at PGD, PGC or even MA level.

Applicants must hold a Higher Diploma from SHMS University Center or another recognised institution and must meet the required competency in English.

Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) Programme
A range of intensive 12-week (PGC) and 18-week (PGD) programmes offer suitably qualified applicants the opportunity to gain knowledge and a recognised qualification in their chosen field. PGCs and PGDs are ideal for applicants seeking to transfer into a new field or to up skill in their current area of work.

Applicants must hold an undergraduate degree in any discipline OR 3 years supervisory experience. All applicants must meet the required competency in English.

MA Degree Programmes
The wide range of MA Degree programmes offer suitably qualified applicants the opportunity to gain a masters qualification, the highest possible (taught) level of academic achievement, in only 10 months! A masters qualification is recognised worldwide as a sign of excellence, ensuring graduates are equipped and qualified to progress to the very top of their chosen profession.

Applicants must hold a suitable undergraduate degree from SHMS University Center or another recognised institution. For the MA Hospitality Management and MBA appropriate industry experience is also required. All applicants must meet the required competency in English.

PhD (Doctorate)
Suitably qualified and motivated persons, who wish to reach the very highest level of academic achievement, may attain their aim by researching for a PhD at SHMS University Center.

Applicants must hold a masters degree or extensive industry experience (management level), and a relevant undergraduate qualification. All applications to PhD will be decided on the basis of an extensive research proposal.

Teaching
The SHMS University Center teaching concept is carefully adapted and fine tuned to the needs of international students:

Lecturers
All our lecturers are well qualified and experienced in teaching international students. Furthermore, lecturers are encouraged to participate in regular staff development, which ensures the material they deliver is always current and accurate. Lecturers are regularly assessed by the academic dean and external examiners, who ensure their delivery is benchmarked against international standards.

Class Size
Small tutorial and class groups are maintained in all programmes, to ensure that personal attention can be given. For some lectures, classes may be combined into larger groups.

Medium of Instruction
English is the medium of instruction at SHMS University Center. The required English levels for the different programmes are listed under “Entry Requirements”.

Teaching Materials
SHMS University Center uses the latest texts and learning resources accessed from all over the world to ensure that all subjects are delivered according to the most up-to-date material available.

SHMS University Center Teaching and Learning Facilities
All classrooms and lecture theaters are equipped with the latest teaching facilities including overhead projectors, video, TV and/or multimedia projectors.

The Learning and Resource Center (LRC) is open 7 days a week, providing access to a wide range of printed texts and journals and a world of electronic data. The LRC offers computers with internet access and wireless internet access for laptops (free of charge).

Laptops
For BA/MA/PhD students, laptops are compulsory whilst for Higher Diploma and PG students laptops are strongly recommended. Students may purchase their laptop before travelling to Switzerland or make use of the special deals offered at SHMS University Center at arrival.

Qualifications
By providing a wide range of high quality, flexible programmes, we ensure that our graduates are well qualified to compete in today’s job market. The following advantages create an impressive impact on future employers:

Combination Degree
Students have the option to either specialise in a particular discipline or to combine two specialist degrees and to graduate with a combined qualification (e.g. BA (Honours) Degree in Hospitality and Events Management).

Double Qualification
Students graduate with a double qualification: The fully British BA/MA degree and equivalent Swiss qualification. This dual qualification significantly enhances the appeal and ‘marketability’ of our graduates.

Language Options
Students in all programmes have the option to study German or French in addition to their chosen qualification. Students will receive certificates for the language level they achieve.

GCC, Graduate Career Center
SHMS University Center prides itself on its graduate placement services. SHMS University Center runs a full-time placement office (GCC), which assists students to find opportunities for employment after graduation.

Entry requirements:

• Intermediate OR 10+2,
• Bachelor degree in any discipline OR,
• At least 3 years supervisory experience in any industry
• English level equivalent to TOEFL 525 (196 computer based), or IELTS 5.5 or 62 points in the SHMS University Center placement test
