Preparing to Leave? Know the Country!!! Often education abroad finishing students report that they wish they had known more about their host country before traveling on their education abroad. Here is a list of questions that can help you learn more about your host culture before you leave. You can find the answers to these questions by asking students who are from there and who studied there, as well as by searching on the web, in the library and book stores. General / Political
- Who is the leader of the country (i.e., prime minister or president)? How and when did he / she come into power?
- What are the important holidays? How is each observed?
- What is the predominant religion?
- What is the history of the relationships between this country and the India?
- Are there many Indian expatriates living in this country? If so, where do they live?
- How many people have emigrated from this country to the India? Are many doing so at the present time?
Social / Culture
- How do young adults meet people the same age? What is the attitude towards dating?
- What are the favorite leisure and recreational activities of adults? college-age students?
- What is one gesture that is different from in India.
- How do people organize their daily activities? What is the normal meal schedule? Is there a daytime rest period? What is the customary time for visiting friends?
- If you are invited to dinner, should you arrive early? on time? late? If late, how late?
- On what occasions would you present (or accept) gifts form people in the country? What kind of gifts would you exchange?
How do people greet one another? shake hands? embrace or kiss? How do they leave one another?
School / Institution / University
- How are grades assigned at the university level? continuous assessment? comprehensive exam(s)? oral exams or written exams?
- How do professors and students interact?
